Then and Now

I recently moved into the ETF Specialist team within iShares. This is essentially a sales role that deals primarily with queries about iShares ETFs. As the analyst in the team my role is to act as a conduit of information between iShares and sales teams that focus on the Institutional and Retail client segments is Asia ex-Japan. This could mean coordinating sales materials, devising ETF sales strategies, or responding to internal and external product information requests.

Having studied economics as an undergrad I find that I’ve acquired a useful base of knowledge for understanding the business of Asset Management. I feel that my analytical skills, ability to communicate and present well, as well as my habitude for working to deadlines make me a valued contributor to the team. These are things I’ve developed through my education. I also think that my diverse personal background and experiences enables me to provide unique contributions.

One of the most useful skills in my role is communication. That is, conveying lots of information – sometimes very complex – in a simple, clear and convincing manner. Being good at this requires analyzing data, using technical tools and displaying attention to detail. I found that being motivated, naturally curious and willing to reach out to people to access information has helped me improve my communication skills and thus, benefit my team.

Favorite Part of The Job

It’s a job where I continuously learn new things in an environment that is demanding, but at the same time very supportive. People genuinely want you to develop and progress. What’s more you get to meet and work alongside some great people.

BlackRock’s Graduate Program

The Graduate Program helps as it gives you an identity with which you can easily seek out mentorship. Also, there is a comprehensive training/ orientation program in New York. This gave me detailed understanding of how BlackRock operates as a business and provided the opportunity to get well acquainted with other grads from different offices around the world. Building such a large internal network so early in my career was and continues to be helpful for navigating my way in a large organization.

Outside the Office

I always try to get outdoors. It may come as a surprise, but living in Hong Kong offers a lot for that.  On weekends there’s hiking, cycling, sailing, fishing and more. I also enjoy watching sports like football. Sometimes I just like to settle into a good book, watch a film, or go out with mates.
